Randall Deaton
Founder, Owner, Audio
Engineer, and Primary Producer
Randall Deaton is the founder, owner, audio
engineer, and primary record producer of Lonesome
Day Records, an independent label based in
Booneville, Kentucky, that champions roots music,
bluegrass, Americana, and related traditions. Born
and raised on a small family farm in eastern
Kentucky, Deaton cultivated a lifelong appreciation
for the storytelling, emotional depth, and cultural
richness of Appalachian and Southern music.
He launched Lonesome Day Records in 2002,
transforming a family property into a recording
studio to capture genuine, heartfelt performances.
The label’s name draws inspiration from Bruce
Springsteen’s “Lonesome Day,” reflecting Deaton’s
commitment to music that resonates on a personal and
human level. From the outset, he has been deeply
involved in every release—engineering, mixing, and
producing the majority—while cultivating a warm,
organic production style that lets artists’ voices
and instruments shine naturally.
Lonesome Day
has released dozens of albums spanning traditional
bluegrass, progressive bluegrass, roots rock,
country, and Americana. The catalog includes work
from artists such as Ralph Stanley II, Blue Moon
Rising, Larry Cordle, Randy Kohrs, Jeff Parker,
Steve Gulley, Lou Reid & Carolina, Richard Bennett,
Girls Guns & Glory, Sarah Borges, Fred Eaglesmith,
and others. The label’s offerings range from
high-lonesome gospel and family-themed collections
to creative tributes (bluegrass interpretations of
Bob Seger, Hank Williams, Jackson Browne),
honky-tonk-infused roots rock, and narrative-driven
Americana, demonstrating a broad embrace of American
roots traditions beyond strict bluegrass boundaries.
Deaton’s dedication to authenticity and quality
has earned the label consistent recognition—chart
placements, radio airplay, and positive reviews from
outlets like Bluegrass Unlimited—while supporting
regional and emerging talents. After a period of
reduced activity, he resumed active production
around 2024, continuing to nurture a catalog that
honors heritage while welcoming fresh expressions of
roots music.
Lonesome Day Records remains a
family-run label rooted in Kentucky soil, embodying
Deaton’s vision of music as a timeless vehicle for
connection, tradition, and inspiration.
