Album Profile
Blue Moon Rising
One Lonely Shadow
PRODUCTION NOTES
“One Lonely Shadow,” the third album by Tennessee-based bluegrass band Blue Moon Rising, delivers a moody blend of traditional high-lonesome sounds with contemporary edges, featuring heartfelt originals and eclectic covers. Released on July 29, 2008, by Lonesome Day Records (catalog LDR-012), it followed their 2005 effort “On the Rise,” with recording taking place at the Lonesome Day studio in 2007, capturing the band’s evolving style amid lineup changes.
The album was produced by Randall Deaton and engineered by Mike Latterell, boasting high production values that emphasize acoustic clarity and emotional depth. The album was mastered by Hank Williams at Master Mix studio in Nashville, ensuring a polished, resonant sound that complements the themes of despair, love, and rural hardship.
The 13-track album (approximately 45 minutes) centers on core members: Chris West on guitar, mandolin, lead and harmony vocals, delivering soulful baritone; Keith Garrett on mandolin, guitar, lead and harmony vocals, with expressive narratives; and Justin Jenkins on banjo, providing rhythmic drive. Guest musicians elevate the project: Mike Bub on bass (most tracks), offering excellent support; Harold Nixon on bass (track 11); Ron Stewart on fiddle (track 11) and pickless banjo (track 7); Tim Crouch on fiddle; Cody Kilby on guitar (tracks 6-8, 13); Randy Kohrs on resonator guitar and harmony vocals (tracks 4, 6). Harmony vocals shine with Dale Ann Bradley (track 10) and Steve Gulley (tracks 2, 10), adding rich layers.
The repertoire mixes band originals like the dark, powerful “The Hanging Tree” (a triptych of gruesome tales) and “Revival” (a Biblical call to personal renewal) with covers including Bruce Springsteen’s “Youngstown,” Townes Van Zandt’s poignant “Marie,” Fred Eaglesmith’s rollicking “Freight Train,” and Robbie Fulks’ “Where There’s A Road.” Standouts such as “I Grew Up Today” evoke Keith Whitley-esque country, while “Angeline” drives with mandolin chops and dobro solos.
Critically acclaimed for its authenticity and diversity, the album earned praise for bridging traditional and modern bluegrass. Country Standard Time noted its contemporary stance, highlighting “The Hanging Tree’s” eerie tones and solid originals. Bluegrass Today called it the band’s best to date, crediting high production and guest contributions for broader appeal. State of the Ozarks lauded its heartfelt emotions, delicate arrangements, and standout tracks like “The Hanging Tree” as representing the best of contemporary bluegrass. Amazon listeners rated it 4.8/5, appreciating the musicianship and song choices. Overall, “One Lonely Shadow” showcases superior ensemble work, thematic depth, and innovative covers, solidifying Blue Moon Rising’s place in roots music.
