Richard Bennett

Last Train From Poor Valley

PRODUCTION NOTES

“Last Train From Poor Valley,” Richard Bennett’s debut album on Lonesome Day Records (catalog LDR-011), showcases his masterful flatpicking guitar and smooth vocals in a blend of bluegrass, folk, and country influences. Released on December 21, 2010, the project followed Bennett’s tenure with J.D. Crowe and the New South in the 1990s, where he featured on the acclaimed “Flashback” album, and three solo efforts with Rebel Records. This timeframe marked a return to recording after collaborations with Mike Auldridge and Jimmy Gaudreau, allowing Bennett to curate a diverse 12-track set drawing from icons like Merle Haggard, Gordon Lightfoot, John Hartford, Norman Blake, and Hoagy Carmichael, plus two originals. Recording occurred in the late 2000s at Lonesome Day studio in Kentucky, emphasizing acoustic arrangements with a Tony Rice-inspired touch. The album was executive-produced by label founder Randall Deaton, with audio engineering handled by Harold Nixon and Randall Deaton to highlight Bennett’s intricate guitar work and ensemble interplay. Mastering ensured a warm, clear sound suited to the rootsy material.

Bennett leads on guitar and vocals throughout the 42-minute album, delivering precise, emotive picking that shines on instrumentals like his self-penned “Roan Mountain Rag” and “From The Top.” The core band includes Harold Nixon on bass, providing steady foundation; Ron Stewart on banjo and fiddle, adding dynamic rolls and bows, notably trading licks with Bennett on the title track; Rickie Simpkins on fiddle, contributing to the melodic depth; Danny Barnes on mandolin, offering choppy rhythms; and Shane Bartley on mandolin. Special guest J.D. Crowe delivers signature banjo on “Wrong Road Again” and “Handsome Molly,” infusing classic drive. A hidden bonus track, “Leaving’s Heavy on My Mind,” appears in Bennett’s “Head On Style,” rewarding attentive listeners.

Critically, the album garnered praise for its eclectic song choices and superb musicianship. Bluegrass Today lauded its variety, from up-tempo drives to jazz-tinged pieces, calling Bennett’s “Tennessee Waltz” arrangement “light and airy” and one of the best heard, while noting the tight title track and Rice-influenced “Georgia on My Mind.” The review highlighted the “first-rate” guests and Bennett’s talents in writing and performing, deeming it a well-rounded effort with “something for everyone.” Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association described it as a “nice compilation” with “stellar” backing from Crowe, Stewart, and Simpkins, appreciating the covers and originals. On Amazon, it holds a 4.8-star rating from user reviews, commending the guitar prowess and song selection. Overall, “Last Train From Poor Valley” cements Bennett’s reputation as a versatile roots artist, blending tradition with innovation through exceptional ensemble contributions and thoughtful production, making it a standout in contemporary bluegrass.
