The compilation album The Very Things You Treasure: 24 Bluegrass Songs of Faith & Family, released in 2010 on Lonesome Day Records (LDR-CD 017), is a single-disc collection of 24 tracks, approximately 76 minutes long, celebrating bluegrass gospel and family values with the label’s signature high-lonesome harmonies, heartfelt lyrics, and acoustic warmth.
This release is inspired by the Deaton family’s profound commitment to faith and family. Minnie Mae Deaton, born in 1932 on a rural southeastern Kentucky farm, passed away in 1992, leaving a legacy of devotion that included bequeathing her church to her youngest grandson, Randall Deaton, with the dream of keeping its spirit alive. In 1999, the family converted the church into a recording studio to produce bluegrass music reflecting Minnie Mae’s cherished ideals of faith and family. Randall founded Lonesome Day Records in 2002 to carry forward that heritage. Minnie Mae’s son Fred passed in 2006 after a long battle with cancer, his final words (“I’ve seen everything I want to see. I just want to be right here with my family”) and his wife Pauline’s ongoing support (handling bookkeeping, mailing CDs, cooking for artists) symbolizing the family’s enduring hospitality and dedication, with Pauline’s kitchen remaining open to all.
Featuring artists such as Ralph Stanley II (“Moms Are The Reason Wild Flowers Grow”), Blue Moon Rising (“Papaw Taught Me,” “He Arose”), Darrell Webb (“Thank You Father for My Dad”), Lou Reid & Carolina, Larry Cordle, Randy Kohrs, Jeff Parker, Steve Gulley, Rick Bartley, Ernie Thacker, Sam Wilson, and others, the tracks include gospel standards, family tributes, and uplifting originals that echo everyday expressions of faith and kinship.
As a dedication to those values and a sampler of Lonesome Day’s mission, the album has been praised for its meaningful content and strong performances, remaining a cherished reminder that the things that matter most come down to faith and family.
